Large Character Cortijo 198m2 – edge of village location.
Are you a country bumpkin and yearn to own a spacious family home, without breaking the bank? Then this may just be for you!
Previously a local Flour Mill, as you can see from photos, a part of this Cortijo is now ripe for reform to enable more accommodation or separate living space / chill out areas to be added..
Situated in the large and popular hamlet of La Atalaya, on the edge of Villanueva de Algaidas (4 min drive) and which has all the amenities for daily basics. Whether it be on a permanent or holiday home basis, this rambling corner plot Cortijo (once it has been reformed) may tick many boxes. The main part of the house is totally habitable and been upgraded sympathetically over the years. Full of character and in very good condition throughout it is clean, well maintained, with high beamed ceilings in the bedrooms, and the huge original fireplace in the kitchen / diner. With a little imagination and TLC, this could be a wonderful family home, surrounded by tranquility – only the sound of the birds singing, or a horse in the distance, as there are two in a corral just 50 metres from the property. The Mill is set back from the road in a small barrio of approx 5 properties and is not overlooked, as surrounded by trees and foliage The first photo gives an idea of what is in the vicinity of the Mill, which is to the rear of the large new house.
If you are a builder, or DIY enthusiast, the work involved within this property could well be worth thinking about. Typical of the older properties, animals were kept in the interior lower corrals, and the Flour Mill, located on the upper floor (see photos) is now ripe for reform (3/4 large rooms) and quite easily connected to the main part of the house or, leave as is with a separate access via the staircase.
There is also a large agricultural garage (offering more options) obviously, it all depends on your needs, but as the Cortijo has no patio space to enjoy, then this could be the answer. Simply remove the roof and convert into a large interior walled Courtyard, with space enough to install a pool.! The Finca is on land classified as urban, so permission for all alterations (including a pool) would not be a problem, a reform licence from the Town Hall of Algaidas is all that is required. If you need a builder, they are available locally, to give no obligation quotes for all the above work, including electrics and plumbing.
The area…
Villanueva de Algaidas is located between the beautiful, historic towns of Antequera and Archidona, (15 mins drive to both) and is large olive production region, north of Malaga. It is a busy village, with every amenity, and business you would need eg. Supermarkets, schools, 25 tapas bars, banks, Medical Centre, Parks, Discotheques, Boutiques, Large summer outdoor pool complex with onsite tapas bar, builders merchants, Post Office, and a super Hostal on the main street, ¨El Bar Chovi¨ a very popular place to meet friends for tapas or an evening meal. Accommodation is offered above, so ideal for short stay breaks. Surrounded by lush green areas on the outskirts, ideal for countryside walks. Many local Ferias are held from Easter onwards, the main Feria normally held in August.. As all villages, there is a Cooperativa (olive processing factory) with on-site gas station, which gives subsidised diesel at much reduced prices! The advantages of living rural inland are many.
The access is just off the quiet country road, (a short 20 metre dirt track) set back into a little corner of the countryside, but walkable to 2 mini supermarkets, tapas bar/restaurant sports complex, and all the amenities in Atalaya.
Layout….
Upon entering the Cortijo is a large open garage.. Just around the side to the right is access to the Old a metal staircase and adjoining that is the entrance to the main house, which is full of character. The Flour Mill reform would be relatively easy and for any experienced builder, beams are something they come across every day, as many village houses also still have them.
Entering the house, and you are in a long, quite narrow living room, which is modestly furnished and separated by living area and dining area. To the immediate left is a double bedroom, or alternatively, if you don´t need a third bedroom, knock through the stud wall and incorporate this to make a much kitchenette. The large original open fireplace, (used for cooking) is situated opposite the living area and the nearby open plan kitchenette. To the left of this area, is a hallway (high ceilings) and from which are accessed independently, the 2 large double bedrooms and the recently installed bathroom. Floors throughout the house are a warm rustic colour and the beams are perfectly fine.
This is an unusual property, as only a viewing could confirm how the Öld Flour Mill¨ could be restored and incorporated or made into a self contained apartment, or whatever would suit your needs. The opportunities are here to transform this into your ideal country home, but obviously, all this takes money and this is where our builders are on hand to give the best prices possible, for a quality job well done.
One not to miss, especially for those looking to put their own stamp on their future home in the sun!. Deeds are in order, no mortgage possible unfortunately, due to the state and age of the property.
We have short videos available of Algaidas and the area/journey to the hamlet.
